So, here we are again. It’s the middle of October and the PGA Tour season has finished and started over almost in the same month. This is 2016-17 if you’re keeping up at home and no matter how much sense the Tour thinks it makes, the wraparound season still doesn’t set well with fans or players.
This new season has started with an old problem: we still don’t have Tiger Woods showing up for a starting time. He was aiming for a comeback at the Safeway Open in California – won by Brendan Steele – and officially committed by the deadline. He told people at the Ryder Cup, where he was an assistant captain, not to worry.
But something came up that obviously spooked him and he abruptly pulled out at the last minute, leaving sponsors, ticket holders and television viewers holding a handful of nothing and wondering – once more – if this is really the end.
Tiger also de-committed to the Turkish Airlines Open in November and that decision was a wise one. The Antalya region has been the target of rocket attacks and the tournament is in jeopardy.
Speaking of the European Tour, which has a more sensible schedule, it celebrated a three-time 2016 winner in Alex Norén, who took the British Masters at The Grove. Norén has had a better year than most of the European Ryder Cup team.
A European won on the LPGA Tour in Korea, where Spain’s Carlota Ciganda captured the KEB Hana Bank Championship. The LPGA’s schedule has turned to its Asian swing but the year ends in November and starts again in January. Now, that makes sense.
