The Shorty: Major Poetry

The first major championship of the season, officially speaking, is the ANA Inspiration, which is often referred to as the women’s Masters, except with rough. Therefore, Lydia Ko is the year’s first major winner, winning Sunday in the California desert.

However, Ko is flying cross-country today to attend the other Masters, the one in Georgia, because she – like most everyone else – wants to see firsthand golf’s emerald cathedral and meet its high priests.

Masters week kicked off Sunday with the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals, perhaps the feel-good golf event of the year, so much so that past Masters champions turn up in their green jackets to smilingly shake hands with the youngsters. It’s not entirely certain which group has more fun that day.

This year, we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Jack Nicklaus’ seminal Masters victory, a story that is retold more than perhaps any other in the game. At age 46, it was Nicklaus’ last major championship and his most unlikely title.

Joining Ko as a wide-eyed first-time visitor to Augusta National will be Jim Herman, a 38-year-old former assistant pro who was told by the likes of Donald Trump to get out of the golf shop and chase his dream.…..READ FULL ARTICLE
