AUGUSTA, GEORGIA | The Masters, at its best, can be equal parts classical heroism and tragedy, especially in the fading light of Sunday evening. Known best for its passion play on the final day, this year’s first major did not fail to disappoint, unless, of course, your name is Spieth.

Finally clear of three days of morale-busting winds, Augusta National was set up with the possibility in clear view that someone from the back of the pack could shoot a score and track down the leader, who happened to be Jordan Spieth.

The 22-year-old had held the lead for seven straight rounds, dating back to his wire-to-wire victory last year for his first major title and the start of one of the more remarkable seasons in professional golf.

But the golf gods in Augusta are as fickle as they are punishing and Spieth drowned his chances to win a second straight Masters not once, but twice, in Rae’s Creek at the par-3 12th.
